The Ministry of Social Affairs and Health issued on 19 January 2001 a Decree on drawing
up of patient documents and retention of them and other material related to care
(99/2001). The Decree contains obligatory rules concerning the drawing up of patient
documents and the retention of them and other material produced in the context of care and
treatment.
The handbook serves as a guide for drawing up patient documents and other handling of
patient data taking into account the Decree referred to above and relevant provisions of
various acts, for instance the Act on the Status and Rights of Patients (785/1992) and the
Personal Data File Act (523/1999).
